Details This action research project explores mobile-assisted extensive reading (MER) as a component in an English oral communications course for 120 education and psychology majors, sophomores, over a fall semester. In a quasi-experimental design, 6 classes engaged in extensive reading through accessing an online library via their mobile devices. Data analysis of students divided into high-achieving, medium-achieving, and low-achieving groups in terms of the number of words they read over one year showed the relative strengths and weaknesses of MER. Structured interviews with selected high and low achieving students indicated students who read the most in each class managed their time effectively, chose books that were easy and interesting to them and set themselves realistic goals.
