概要 | This study uses data from Statistics of Japan to examine the effects of regional difference in minimum wage on the employment pattern by gender in the local labor market. In a cross-sectional analysis using data separately from 2012 and 2016, we find that a region with a higher minimum wage tends to have a higher proportion of non-regular workers among paid employees. In a longitudinal analysis focused on the changes between 2012 and 2016, it was found that an increase in the regional minimum wage leads to a fall in the number of male regular workers but a rise in the number of female irregular workers in the region. The results suggest that the regional differential of the minimum wage could lead to a decline in the quality of employment, especially in areas with a higher minimum wage and areas experiencing a fast increase in the minimum wage. |
